Hi everyone. I finally decided to give up my post of Head of Dept and return to being just an ordinary classroom teacher again this academic year. I'd known for a while, deep down, that it was probably going to be the right thing but wouldn't make the decision- not for the money (I wasn't getting that much more for all the extra work anyway) but because of my stubborn refusal to accept that it was getting too much for me.I'd done the job so long, and I really didn't want to give up the status. A week into the term and it's proving to be the best decision I made. No more meetings, taking the rap when things go wrong, dealing with obnoxious dept colleagues, all the paperwork, policies to write, exams admin...the list goes on and on. It now remains to be seen what the effect on my health is- psychologically I feel great Maria x

Wonderful Maria! I have a colleague who did the same thing for the same reasons and she doesn't regret a single minute! YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

The right choice Maria I think and delighted that you feel much happier about things too.
Remember about the pacing though!
When does the change start?

Well done to you and for being so corageous in taking such a big decision. I had to bite the bullet and ask to work from home two days a week out of five. For 20 years I have been in charge of admin and I felt so out of the loop when not in for those two days. However, it was the best decision I ever made. I tried to do five days at work last week and it nearly killed me so I know it was the right decision.
Some times a leap of faith is all it needs. Good for you.

Hi Maria
Sounds like you have made the best choice. You can now enjoy your job without the extra stresses of being Head of Department. This will probably help with your arthritis too as stress certainly doesn't help with flare ups etc.

Fantastic Maria! Hope you continue to feel the benefit. I'm thinking I need to look at whether I can keep up my KS3 role. So glad you feel it was the right decision for you xx Ailsa

Thanks for your encouraging replies everyone. If I had any doubts at all you've managed to convince me it was the right thing. Jenni- it started on the 1st September. I know what you mean about pacing though- this is the next part of the learning curve. I mustn't start going mad, thinking I can do other things ( apart from taking it easy and enjoying myself). I must learn to bite my tongue at times, though, and learn to let go of the reins.
Cheers
Maria x
